a meeting with congressional leaders to talk about the fiscal cliff. he said it was a good day and constructive conversation. he also said mitch mcconnell and harry reid are currently working on a bipartisan agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff. again a reminder, on january 1st, a package of across-the- board spending cuts and tax increases go into effect. the president also issued an ultimatum saying if no bipartisan agreement can be reached, he will ask them to bring it package to the floor for an up or down vote. why does everyone have to wait until the last minute? he called this a self-inflicted political wounds. it is because they could not reach a deal earlier this year. we will have more tonight at 11. now we will lighten the mood a little bit here to talk about the soft shell crab sandwich. that's quite a sad way. it may become the first state sandwich. -- that's quite a segue. in 2008, they pass legislation to make the multi layered cake our state dessert. >> i like the sandwich. indicative ordered to -- an executive order aimed at minimizing damage to new and restruct

a meeting, a last ditch effort to try to help the economy avoid the fiscal cliff, or at least pieces of it, and, yes, the buzz around washington is a possible path forward that aids describe as preventing tax increase for income amounts of $400,000 or $500,000 or so, extend unemployment insurance, but, still, nothing has been agreed to. all in washington are waiting to see how this meeting goes. it's just about to start here in dc. meanwhile, on capital hill, the fighting continues, and in some corners, a sense of pessimism. >> if we don't have a deal within the next 24 hours, the question is where do you buy a parachute? we'll be going over the cliff because the closer we get to the end, the less likely it is you can compress an agreement into place that will have enough votes to pass. >> this is basically it. the first time in weeks the top democrat, the top republican from the house and senate have gotten together here at the white house with the president and vice president, congressional leaders arriving, and the meeting should be starting shortly. back to you. ashley: we'll see what

crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith propos

they need to come up with some kind of agreement before they go over the fiscal cliff at the end of the year. the senate will be meeting today. this is the first time we have seen legislative business conducted in the weeks between christmas and new years since 1970. the house come back as well but nothing yet. the other thing to consider here the two key players in all of this president obama and republican house speaker john boehner. as far as we know the two of them have not really been talking. the lines of communication are theoretically open but both of them seem to be standing their ground. one other factor to consider here is something we just heard from the treasury secretary tim geithner telling us we are rapidly approaching the nation's debt ceiling. we could hit it by the end of the year. there are accounting tricks we can use to prevent us from hitting that by the end of the month. it shows you how complicated this is getting. one other factor that was going to become part of the grand bargain if we ever reach grand bargain. right now they could be looking for a stopgap measure.
